Chuck Lowry's Q&A
Q. Hey, Chuck, who are your customers? Who else is using this ALM Research online database besides me?
A. An interesting question. Our subscribers fall within two very broad categories, law firms and vendors.
Although we do not ever (and I mean ever, really) discuss individual subscribers, I can tell you that large law firms comprise the vast majority of subscribers. Interestingly, there are several user centers within the law firm. The two largest are the library and the marketing department. The way that firms assign and complete business development research varies quite widely. Anecdotally, I have noted a trend recently in which the law firm marketing department and library will share responsibility and cost for a researcher. Typically, the work assignments will come from marketing, but the day-to-day work milieu, including support and resources, will be located within the library. Additional users in large law firms can be found in finance and recruiting.
Vendors are, of course, a less concentrated market for ALM Research, but a very important market. Types of vendors subscribing to the database include consultants, publishing companies, technology vendors and recruiting firms.
When we add materials to the database or develop materials for the database, we try to keep the users in mind. We are, however, very happy to hear right from you about changes, improvements, additions, etc. Please feel free to communicate by e-mail (clowry@alm.com) or by phone (212.592.4932) whenever you have a comment, question or suggestion.
